Tyler Glasnow made his first rehab start with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets on Sunday as he works his way back to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation.
Glasnow pitched two innings without allowing a run or hit. He also added a strikeout, but issued three walks.
The lack of command shouldn’t be a surprise, nor a concern, in his first rehab outing. The Dodgers were hoping to get two innings from the right-hander, and he was able to complete that, which was the most encouraging sign.
How he comes out of hit on Monday will be another major factor for how quickly Glasnow can progress. As long as there are no setbacks, he should be in line to make another rehab start of around three innings his next time out.
Glasnow will need to make at least a few more rehab outings, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said they could bring him back to the Majors before he’s fully built up.
“I think that with Tyler, we have an option,” Roberts said over the weekend. “I think with Emmett looming, his ability to come back in however many days, and obviously, with Wrobo. So Tyler, as he’s continuing to build up, as he starts to get to three, four innings, we can kind of have a decision at some point.”
The Dodgers are likely to take the more cautious route with Glasnow given his extensive injury history and primary focus to have him ready for the postseason.
Glasnow first landed on the 15-day injured list on April 28 with right shoulder inflammation. He was later transferred to the 60-day injured list, which made June 27 the earliest day he could return.
He threw his first bullpen session nearly one month later on May 23, but was shut down after it. Glasnow downplayed it, saying it was more precautionary than anything and his shoulder was good to go.
After that, he continued to build up, and advanced to facing hitters in simulated games before starting his rehab assignment. A pitcher is allowed to be on assignment for 30 days after they begin it.

Glasnow has made five starts this season, but was limited in three of them, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 innings. In two seasons with the Dodgers, he is a combined 10-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 27 starts thus far.
