Teoscar Hernández was re-signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers to a three-year contract after an initial season with the team that included plenty of memorable moments and highlights.
Hernández’s hot start to the 2024 season earned him a selection to the All-Star Game that was hosted by Texas Rangers, and he elected to expand on that by participating in the Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field.
Taking down Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. in the finals, Hernández became the first Dodgers player to win the Derby among the 11 who have previously tried.
That set the stage for Hernández to defend his title during All-Star Week festivities in Atlanta, and he expressed a willingness to do so if it was accompanied by another selection to the Midsummer Classic.
However, Hernández has now changed his stance and will not participate in the 2025 Home Run Derby in the interest of remaining healthy for the rest of the season, via AM 570 L.A. Sports:
“I was considering it at the beginning, but not right now. I think I’m not going to do it this year. Maybe next year. Because last year, when I finished the Home Run Derby, I was a little tired, tight. My body was a little tired, and with the injury that I had with my groin this year, I don’t want to put anything at risk. So I’m going to stay put and not participate this year.”
Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. and Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners are the only participants confirmed for the Home Run Derby at Truist Park thus far. Like Hernández, Cincinnati Reds Elly De La Cruz passed on the opportunity to be part of the field.
Hernández spent nearly two weeks on the 10-day injured list back in May because of a left groin strain/adductor issue. There was initial concern the injury was going to keep him out long-term, but Hernández wound up making a speedy recovery.
The Home Run Derby was more of a personal feat, but it highlighted what Hernández can do when all eyes are on him. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience but has been consistent in that the primary focus is on the Dodgers repeating as World Series champions.
Hernández may be skipping the Derby but he advanced to Phase 2 for All-Star Game voting as one of the National League finalists in the outfield.
Teoscar Hernández trying to find form
Although Hernández didn’t miss much time with his injury, it threw him off course and was followed by some struggles at the plate upon being activated.
