Dodgers Spring Training: Shohei Ohtani Scheduled For Back-To-Back Cactus League Games

Shohei Ohtani has been in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup for three Cactus League games this spring as he works toward his goal of logging 50 plate appearances to prepare for the start the regular season.

The two-time American League MVP already appears to be in midseason form as he has jumped out to a 5-for-7 start at the plate with a triple, home run and five RBI. Ohtani also is in the midst of reaching safely in seven consecutive plate appearances.

One hurdle yet to be cleared is playing in consecutive Cactus League games, but that could change this week as the Dodgers continue their Spring Training schedule.

Manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani is expected to be in the Dodgers lineup for back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox, via Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times:

Roberts said the plan for Ohtani, who will be relegated to designated hitter this season as he recovers from his second Tommy John surgery, is to play Tuesday night against the Angels and Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Ohtani previously noted that he wasn’t too concerned about playing in consecutive days as his primary concern is on staying healthy and the quality of his at-bats.

“I’m not too focused on going back-to-back at this point,” Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. “I’m more focused on each at-bat, making sure my intensity level is there, and making sure my physique and recovery is going on.”

Despite the shortened spring, Ohtani remains on track to be in the Dodgers lineup when they face the San Diego Padres during the Seoul Series later this month.

Shohei Ohtani potentially working out at first base & outfield

While Ohtani is expected to receive all of his at-bats as the Dodgers’ designated hitter this season, he was recently spotted with an outfield glove and first base mitt at his locker.

Ohtani is unlikely to play anywhere but DH, but the Dodgers may be open to him working out at first base and in the outfield once his elbow is fully recovered.
