Dodgers Spring Training Highlights: Walks Bring In Runs During Tie With Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers were outhit by the Los Angeles Angels, but if not for Minor Leaguer James Jones allowing a game-tying double when he was one strike away from ending the game, they still would have come away with a win.

Instead, the Dodgers settled for a second consecutive tie in their first of five Spring Training games with the Angels.

The Dodgers were without a hit until Jonny DeLuca’s one-out single in the third inning, and they didn’t score until the fourth. That came despite not collecting a single hit in the inning.

Carlos Estévez walked Chris Taylor, Austin Barnes and Max Muncy to load the bases with nobody out. J.D. Martinez struck out swinging, but Estévez then walked Trayce Thompson to bring in a run that put the Dodgers ahead 1-0.

Estévez was replaced by Kolton Ingram, who got David Peralta swinging but followed that with a walk of DeLuca. Ingram did manage to end the Dodgers’ scoring there by striking out Mookie Betts.

That proved key as the Angels mounted their own rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Myles Emmerson tied the game with a two-run double when the Dodgers were one strike away from picking up a win at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

The Angels had six hits, while the Dodgers mustered just three but did draw 10 walks.

Dodgers pitching stats

Tony Gonsolin made his first start of the spring and effectively pitched around traffic over 2.1 innings.

“I thought Tony was good. I thought the ball was coming out OK,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. “The main thing for us was to get him to the third inning, so we did that. I felt it was pretty good.

“Breaking ball and split-change was good. Again, getting him built up was the key.”

Justin Bruihl and Robbie Erlin were among the Dodgers relief pitchers who turned in a scoreless appearance.
