Dodgers Sign Shane Greene; Evan Phillips Placed On Injured List, Conner Greene Designated For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced the signing of Shane Greene and added him to their active roster prior to Friday’s game against the New York Mets.

Evan Phillips was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain, and Conner Greene was designated for assignment in order to make room for the Dodgers’ new arrival on their 40-man roster.

Shane Greene joins the club three days after it was reported he was nearing an agreement with L.A. The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves last week and subsequently released.

Despite successful campaigns in 2019 and 2020, Greene remained a free agent until re-signing with Atlanta on a one-year deal this past May. He reported to Triple-A Gwinnett to build up arm strength before joining the Braves’ active roster in June.

Greene went on to appear in 19 games but struggled to the tune of an 8.47 ERA, 6.77 FIP and 1.82 WHIP. That was a far cry from the combined 2.39 ERA Greene sported for the 2019-2020 seasons, though there was some to be desired with a 23.5% strikeout rate during that span.

This year the 32-year-old has pitched to 20.5% strikeout percentage and 10.8% walk rate, but a 30.4% groundball rate that is a career-low mark.

The Dodgers previously were connected to Greene at the 2019 MLB trade deadline, when the Detroit Tigers ultimately ended up sending him to the Braves.

Conner Greene will now pass through waivers and could remain with the organization if going unclaimed. L.A. claimed Greene off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles earlier this month. He threw two scoreless innings over two appearances with the Dodgers.

Phillips injured after Dodgers debut

Phillips, who the Dodgers claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, appeared in just one game before landing on the IL. He threw 2.1 innings on Thursday night and allowed one run to the Mets.
