In his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani was named the unanimous National League Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, receiving all 30 first-place votes.

Ohtani joins Frank Robinson as the only two players in MLB history to win an MVP Award in both the NL and the American League. He previously was voted AL MVP for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023. Ohtani is also just the 12th player in MLB history to win the MVP Award at least three times.

Ohtani becomes the 13th player in franchise history to win MVP and it’s the 15th time a Dodgers player has taken the honor. Ohtani is the first Dodgers player to win MVP since Cody Bellinger in the 2019 season.

He is the second player to win MVP in consecutive seasons with different teams, joining Barry Bonds, who won in 1992 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and 1993 with the San Francisco Giants.

Although the two-way superstar was unable to pitch due to injury, he had an offensive season for the ages, becoming the first 50/50 player in MLB history.

The left-handed slugger finished the year hitting .310/.390/.646 with 38 doubles, seven triples, 54 home runs, 134 runs scored, 130 runs batted in and a 181 wRC+ while stealing 59 bases and finishing with 9.1 WAR.

Ohtani led the NL in runs, homers, RBI, slugging, WAR, on-base plus slugging (1.036) and total bases (411). It was his second consecutive season with an OPS of more than 1.000.

The New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor finished second in voting while Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks placed third.

Lindor finished the season hitting .273/.344/.500 with 33 home runs, 107 runs scored, 91 RBI, 29 stolen bases, a 137 wRC+ and 7.8 WAR.

Marte hit .292/.372/.560 with 36 home runs, 93 runs scord, 95 RBI, seven stolen bases, a 151 wRC+ and 6.3 WAR.

Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández also received votes in the top-10 of MVP voting.

Shohei Ohtani awards in 2024 season

In addition to his MVP honors, Ohtani has been racking up the awards this year.

He was previously named the NL Hank Aaron Award winner, the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter, the NL Outstanding Player as part of the Players Choice Awards, Sporting News’ MLB Player of the Year, and he won his third Silver Slugger Award while being selected to the All-MLB Team.

The 2024 World Series champion had a season the will stand among the best of all-time, and he capped it off with the most prestigious honor.
