Dodgers News: Shohei Ohtani Baseball Card Sells For More Than $1 Million

Shohei Ohtani made MLB history in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers by becoming the first player to record at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. He accomplished the feat en route to winning unanimous National League MVP honors.

The historic performance has resulted in the value of Ohtani baseball cards significantly increasing, including an ultra rare find from a Topps set.

The 2024 Topps Shohei Ohtani Black Dynasty “50/50” Relic is a one-of-a-kind autographed card that features the Major League Baseball logo from the pants he wore while recording his record-breaking 50th home run and 50th stolen base against the Miami Marlins.

The card was up for bidding through Heritage Auctions and sold for a record $1.067 million on Sunday morning. It’s the first Dodgers card of any kind to sell for more than $1 million.

“Shohei Ohtani is baseball’s biggest star, and what he did when he reached 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season is one of the most remarkable accomplishments in the history of the game,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage Auctions.

“Many of the top results for sports cards are for a player’s rookie year, commemorating the start of a legendary career, but this card celebrates an accomplishment from his seventh season, which spotlights the enormity of his 50/50 season and his popularity as a global icon in the sport.”

The previous record price for an Ohtani card was the $533,140 paid for his 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs Orange Refractor card this past November.

The Ohtani card from Topps fell just short of surpassing the $1.1 million that Paul Skenes’ one-of-one rookie card sold for earlier this month.

Ohtani’s 50th home run ball sold for a record $4.392 million last October, which preceded Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam ball from Game 1 of the World Series selling for $1.56 million.

Shohei Ohtani leads MLB’s most popular jersey sales

Ohtani has the most popular jersey in the Majors, leading six Dodgers players who placed among the top 20 in MLB sales since the end of the 2024 World Series.

Freeman (No. 2), Mookie Betts (No. 4), Yoshinobu Yamamoto (No. 10), Clayton Kershaw (No. 11) and Kiké Hernández (No. 16) also made the list.
