Dodgers Rumors: Julian Fernández Getting Called Up From Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to be plagued by injuries this season, as the past week has particularly impacted their group of position players.

It began with Max Muncy suffering a bone bruise in his left knee, and continued with manager Dave Roberts revealing Kiké Hernández has been playing through a left elbow issue, and Teoscar Hernández (left foot soreness) and Tommy Edman (hairline fracture in right pinky toe) are also not 100%.

Meanwhile, there has been encouraging developments on the pitching front as Tyler Glasnow is poised to return this week, and Blake Snell and Blake Treinen are due to begin rehab assignments.

But as the Dodgers enter their final stretch of games before the All-Star break, they are expected to call up Julian Fernández as a fresh arm for their bullpen, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

It’s not yet clear who Fernández is going to replace on the Dodgers’ roster. Furthermore, the team is also going to need to make room for the right-hander on their 40-man roster.

It’s plausible Lou Trivino would be designated for assignment in order to address both roster moves for Fernández in one fell swoop.

When did Dodgers sign Julian Fernández?

The Dodgers signed Fernández to a Minor League contract in January, along with the likes of Sam Carlson, Justin Dean, Matt Sauer and others.

Fernández originally signed with the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in July 2012. He was later selected by the San Francisco Giants as the second pick in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft and remained with the organization until joining the Miami Marlins one year later.

Fernández was returned to the Rockies in October 2019 and proceeded to make his MLB debut in 2021. He struggled in six appearances, allowing eight runs and 13 baserunners over 6.2 innings.

While with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, the 29-year-old has gone 3-0 with one save, a 4.08 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 24 games (two starts).
