Dodgers Rumors: Josh Byrnes, Brandon Gomes Drawing Interest From Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers have built an organization that several other clubs wish to emulate, which results in their executives being popular names when various front office opportunities arise.

Although the postseason remains underway, Dodgers senior vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes and assistant general manager Brandon Gomes are among those drawing interest.

L.A. hired Byrnes in November 2014, when the club also brought on Farhan Zaidi as general manager. Zaidi of course now is heading up the San Francisco Giants’ front office, and it’s a vacancy Gomes has helped the Dodgers fill behind a collective effort.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, the New York Mets have interest in Byrnes and Gomes as they search for a new president of baseball operations:

Two Dodgers executives are on the Mets’ radar, senior VP Josh Byrnes and assistant GM Brandon Gomes. Byrnes’ level of interest in the job is not yet clear, but if the Mets asked for permission to speak with him, they will almost certainly receive it, sources say.

The Mets are asking around and doing diligence on other candidates, too.

Last season, the Philadelphia Phillies reportedly had Byrnes as the favorite to land their open president of baseball operations job before he withdrew his name from consideration and decided to stay in L.A.

The Phillies also had interest in Dodgers vice president and assistant general manager Jeff Kingston, who was a finalist for the L.A. Angeles GM job.

While Byrnes decided not to join the Phillies, the Mets are a much more enticing team to take over as they have a strong core and an owner who is willing to spend to make them winners.

If Byrnes does end up getting the job, it would not be surprising to see him also hire other executives from within the Dodgers organization — perhaps Gomes included.

Byrnes has been a general manager for parts of eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres. Byrnes last held the role with the Padres prior to being fired in June 2014.

Byrnes’ role with Dodgers

With the Dodgers, Brynes plays a key role in their scouting and player development system. He was a candidate to take over for Zaidi when he left for the Giants, but the Dodgers decided Byrnes was too important in his current role.
