The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Tommy Edman off the 10-day injured list before the finale of their Freeway Series matchup with the Los Angeles Angels.
Edman takes the roster spot of Chris Taylor, who was released from the organization. Taylor had been the longest-tenured Dodgers position player in the wake of Austin Barnes being designated for assignment last week.
Taylor joined the Dodgers organization via trade with the Seattle Mariners during the 2016 deadline. He went on to become an integral member of the roster for nearly a decade as the Dodgers established a reign over the National League West and emerged as perennial World Series contenders.
Taylor was approaching becoming a player with 10-and-5 rights, which would have provided him with a full no-trade clause. By being released rather than designated for assignment, Taylor is immediately a free agent.
The Dodgers are responsible for Taylor’s remaining salary this season, minus whatever he potentially signs for with another team.
Assuming Taylor signs, he will continue to make progress toward reaching 10 years of Major League service time. It just will come without the benefit of a no-trade clause due to not spending the last five seasons with a single team.
During his Dodgers career, Taylor hit 250/.330/.431 with 108 home runs and 423 RBI.
Taylor signed a four-year, $60 million contract with the Dodgers in December 2021. His deal included a $12 million team option for 2026, and $4 million buyout.
Tommy Edman returns
Edman is back with the Dodgers much later than originally anticipated when right ankle inflammation forced him to the injured list. Manager Dave Roberts projected Edman would miss the minimum number of days required, but an expected return during the Arizona Diamondbacks series was eventually ruled out due to lingering ankle soreness.
Edman continued to go through rehab drills throughout the past week and also took at-bats against Emmet Sheehan and Dodgers prospect Maddux Bruns. Edman and Hernández both ran the bases on Friday as a last hurdle of sorts.
For Edman, that amounted to returning on Sunday. Hernández is completing a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and should be activated Monday.
Edman is batting .252/.295/.523 with four doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 24 RBI in 122 plate appearances over 30 games this season. His career high in home runs is 13, originally set in 2022 and matched in 2023.
