Dodgers Roster: Rylan Bannon Designated For Assignment

Rylan Bannon was designated for assignment as a corresponding move to make room for Tony Wolters on the Los Angeles Dodgers 40-man roster. Wolters was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City due to Austin Barnes being placed on the family emergency list.

Barnes must be away from the team for at least three days, but no more than seven.

Bannon is now passing through waivers just four days after joining the Dodgers organization. He was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, who DFA’d the infielder in a move that had not been publicly reported.

Bannon only appeared in four games for the Orioles this season, going 2-for-14 with five strikeouts. He batted .229/.347/.407 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 58 RBI over 78 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

The 26-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut, but hit .266/.345/.421 with 32 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBI across two levels during the Minor League season in 2019.

Baltimore added Bannon to their 40-man roster in order to protect him from potentially getting selected in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft.

Although the Dodgers claimed Bannon on waivers, he didn’t figure to factor into the picture at the Major League level.

“I don’t think that’s in the plan,” manager Dave Roberts said this week when asked if Bannon was under consideration to join the active roster at some point. “Anything can happen, but I don’t think that’s on our radar right now.”

Bannon part of Dodgers trade for Machado

Bannon’s brief time with the Dodgers represented a return to the organization that picked him in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Bannon was then included in the July 2018 trade with the Orioles to acquire Manny Machado.

Along with Bannon, the Orioles received Yusniel Díaz, Dean Kremer, Breyvic Valera and Zach Pop.
