The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Ryan Loutos and optioned Justin Wrobleski to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to their series opener against the Los Angeles Angels.
Wrobleski was previously recalled on Thursday for the Dodgers’ scheduled bullpen game against the Athletics. He factored into the game by throwing the final four innings and recording the win.
Wrobleski allowed just one hit with four strikeouts during his appearance, combining with Matt Sauer and Anthony Banda to pitch the full game and give the rest of the Dodgers bullpen a night off in their 19-2 win.
It was Wrobleski’s third stint with the team this season after he was on the Opening Day roster for the Tokyo Series and was recalled last month to make a spot start in place of the injured Blake Snell.
While filling in as a spot starter previously, the 24-year-old allowed eight runs over five innings and took the loss against the Washington Nationals.
For the Dodgers this year, Wrobleski has thrown nine innings with an 8.00 ERA with eight strikeouts and a 1.33 WHIP. While with Oklahoma City this season, the southpaw has gone 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in six starts.
Ryan Loutos new to Dodgers bullpen
Loutos was acquired at the start of May from the St. Louis Cardinals for cash considerations before being sent to Triple-A. This marks his first stint with the Dodgers and second at the big league level.
The right-hander made his MLB debut with the Cardinals last season and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings over three appearances.
Loutos has pitched 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings with the Comets this season while recording one save. He struck out two and walked one across his three games.
Prior to joining the Dodgers organization, Loutos tossed eight innings for Memphis while allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
It would not be surprising to see Loutos optioned back down on Saturday when Clayton Kershaw returns, but the move gives the Dodgers a fresh arm for an extra day in the meantime as the number of innings their bullpen has thrown has already been a concern.
