The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Jimmie Sherfy off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and designated Bobby Wahl for assignment in order to add the right-handed relief pitcher to their 40-man roster.
Sherfy signed a Minor League contract with the Giants during the offseason and was promoted to the active roster in early June. Sherfy allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks in 10 relief appearances, and had nine strikeouts over 10.2 innings.
The 29-year-old, who is out of Minor League options, was designated for assignment by the Giants on July 6 as a corresponding move to activating Tyler Beede off the 60-day injured list.
Sherfy also has Major League experience with the Arizona Diamondbacks, spending parts of three seasons with them from 2017-2019. Sherfy appeared in 43 games over that span, going 3-0 with two saves, a 2.98 ERA, 3.82 FIP and 1.17 WHIP.
The Dodgers claimed Wahl off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers at the end of June, and he only appeared in three games for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Wahl was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics out of the University of Mississippi. He made his debut with the A’s in 2017 and has also pitched for the New York Mets in addition to the Brewers.
The 29-year-old hasn’t pitched in the Majors this season, and only made three appearances for the Brewers last year. Overall, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 7.63 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 17 games across stints with the Athletics, Mets and Brewers.
Dodgers go pitching heavy in Draft
Of their 20 selections in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Dodgers selected 18 pitchers. They did not take a position player in the Draft until picking shortstop Michael Sirota in the 16th round.
