Dodgers Roster: Freddie Freeman Placed On 10-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Freddie Freeman on the 10-day injured list due a sprained right ankle. Freeman’s IL stint was backdated to March 31.

The Dodgers did not yet announce who is getting recalled to take Freeman’s spot on the active roster. Kiké Hernández has been making starts at first base in his absence.

The roster move comes after Freeman missed the Dodgers’ last three games due to aggravating his surgically-repaired right ankle by slipping in the shower. He began going through workouts in the middle of the week and was deemed by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts “50-50” to play in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves.

For his part, Freeman pointed to the start of the Dodgers’ road trip as the most likely point for his return. But now he’s due to miss more games with what he’s called “frustrating” development with falling.

Freeman has only played in three games so far this season, as he missed the Tokyo Series because of left rib discomfort. He’d gotten past that minor issue and was encouraged by the recent improvement with his right ankle as well. Freeman also revealed he started feeling under the weather during the exhibition Freeway Series but had recovered from that too.

Although the 35-year-old expressed disappointment with tweaking his right ankle, there also was some sense of relief to have avoided a more serious injury.

“It’s a glass door, so it could’ve been so much worse. I could’ve hit my head or something like that. I’m very thankful it was just a little mishap with my ankle,” Freeman said earlier this week.

When will Freddie Freeman return?

Freeman is not eligible to be activated until Thursday, April 10, which is an off day on the Dodgers’ schedule. Thus, he conceivably will be available when the Dodgers begin their homestand against the Chicago Cubs the following night.
