The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Dustin May on the 60-day injured list on Thursday in order to make room for Ryan Brasier on the 40-man roster.

Brasier’s two-year, $9 million contract was made official on the first day Dodgers pitchers and catchers reported to Camelback Ranch for the start of 2024 Spring Training. Brasier’s deal reportedly includes incentives that can raise the total value to $13 million.

As for May, he’s on the mend from last year’s season-ending surgery to repair his right flexor tendon. May also had a Tommy John revision for a Grade 2 sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL).

The right-hander went 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA, 3.23 FIP and 0.94 WHIP in 48 innings pitched prior to undergoing elbow surgery.

May had his 2021 season end early due to injury as well, requiring Tommy John surgery in that instance. A prolonged recovery then limited May to just six starts in 2022.

Over parts of five seasons with the Dodgers, May owns a career 12-9 record, 3.10 ERA, 3.76 FIP and 1.05 WHIP in 46 games (34 starts).

Thursday was the first day the Dodgers could begin utilizing the 60-day IL as they opened camp for Spring Training. They are ahead of most other teams due to starting the 2024 season with the Seoul Series against the San Diego Padres from March 20-21.

Tony Gonsolin and Nick Frasso are additional candidates to be put on the 60-day IL during Spring Training. Clayton Kershaw may find himself there as well once the Dodgers officially re-sign the longtime ace.

Will Dustin May pitch in 2024?

The earliest May is expected to return to the Dodgers is some point after the All-Star break. However, the team reportedly plans to exercise caution and there is not guarantee May will pitch during the 2024 season.

On January 17, May posted a video of throwing from flat ground for the first time since last July’s elbow surgery.

Whether or not he pitches this season, May was among the 10 Dodgers players who avoided arbitration for 2024. He signed a one-year contract worth $2.135 million, which fell short of the $2.4 million salary MLB Trade Rumors projected.
