The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Zach McKinstry to Triple-A Oklahoma City and Carson Fulmer was designated for assignment in order to pare their active roster down from 28 to 26 players.

Related to that, MLB and the Players Association (MLBPA) agreed teams can carry a maximum of 14 pitchers on their rosters from May 2-29. The original plan called for active rosters to be reduced to 26 players, with no more than 13 pitchers permitted.

The Dodgers spent much of the first month of the regular season with 16 pitchers on their roster, and manager Dave Roberts said the club intends on remaining at 14 while permitted to do so.

Fulmer is now passing through waivers two days after being recalled as a corresponding move to Mitch White going on the COVID injured list. Fulmer did not appear in the series against the Detroit Tigers, and had a 2.31 ERA with 12 strikeouts across 11.2 innings over 12 appearances for Oklahoma City this season.

The Dodgers were the sixth different organization Fulmer has been part of since being picked by the Chicago White Sox eight overall in the 2015 MLB Draft. The former heralded prospect believed he would find success with the Dodgers, who provided him with a concise plan.

It’s possible Fulmer will remain part of the organization if he were to clear waivers and accept a Minor League assignment. Fulmer was out of options, and by going down the DFA route, the Dodgers freed up a 40-man roster spot that will be necessary once David Price and/or White is activated off the COVID IL.

Dodgers roster churn

McKinstry heads down to OKC for a third time this season. Though, one of his Minor League options was only a paper move as the Dodgers immediately McKinstry when Price was put on the IL.

Monday is the first day teams are limited to five Minor League options for a player during a season. Thus, McKinstry’s official count is now at one.
