Dodgers Recall Rocky Gale From Triple-A Oklahoma City After Trading Travis d’Arnaud To Rays

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Rocky Gale from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move to trading Travis d’Arnaud to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations on Friday.

In essence the Dodgers have rotated through options for a third catcher on their active roster, though Gale lacks the versatility d’Arnaud provided. This marks Gale’s second time joining the Dodgers, and he’s immediately available as the series with the Washington Nationals continues.

His first time up from Oklahoma City this season was a result of Russell Martin landing on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation. Gale was optioned back to OKC when Martin returned on April 27.

He appeared in four games during that time, all of which were starts, but had just two hits and seven strikeouts in 14 plate appearances. Gale previously spent time in the Majors when he appeared in two games for the Dodgers last season, and three with the San Diego Padres in 2017 and six in 2015.

As the backup to prospect Will Smith, Gale has only appeared in eight games for Oklahoma City this season. Although he may not have positional flexibility, the 31-year-old will allow for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to more liberally utilize Barnes and Martin.
