Dodgers Recall Breyvic Valera, Option Brock Stewart To Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled infielder/outfielder Breyvic Valera and optioned pitcher Brock Stewart to Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Stewart filled in as a starter for the Dodgers the last couple times through the rotation, with both Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill on the disabled list. But with Kershaw due back for Thursday’s series finale against the Phillies, there was no longer a need for Stewart in the rotation.

He got the start on Monday against Philadelphia and gave up five hits and four runs in four innings, with the Dodgers coming back to win the game, 5-4.

In five games (two starts) at the big league level so far this season, Stewart has posted a 4.61 ERA, 5.89 FIP and 1.54 WHIP while striking out 11 compared to six walks in 13.2 innings. There was some talk about him possibly remaining with the team as a long reliever, but that is on hold for now.

Like Stewart, Valera has been back and forth between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City with plenty of frequency this season. He has appeared in five games for the Dodgers, although he has only gotten six opportunities at the plate in which he has gone 0-for-4 with two walks.

Valera has swung the bat extremely well for Oklahoma City, hitting .317/.393/.537 with six home runs, 28 runs and 21 RBI in 36 games. His ability to play just about anywhere around the diamond is something that the Dodgers organization has really come to value in recent years.
