Major League Baseball announced Yasiel Puig was suspended two games and fined for his role in Tuesday’s benches-clearing brawl between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. Puig is expected to appeal his punishment. Nick Hundley was fined but not suspended.

The incident began innocently enough, as Puig displayed frustration with himself over fouling off a pitch from Tony Watson with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Video of the sequence suggest Hundley said something to Puig as he stood outside the batter’s box.

Puig responded, which prompted Hundley to get up from his crouch. More words were then exchanged before Puig shoved the catcher, which led to players from the benches and bullpens rushing onto the field.

Puig said in his postgame interview he took exception with Hundley telling him to stop complaining. He alleged the Giants catcher also used expletives that Puig would not repeat. Hundley declined to offer any specifics, instead saying the matter was resolved on the field.

Puig has previously been suspended once in his career (one game plus a fine) for an obscene gesture made toward fans who were heckling him during a June 2017 game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
