Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Stellar In 2nd Rehab Start, Evan Phillips Struggles

Tony Gonsolin and Evan Phillips continued their rehab assignments with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets on Wednesday as both move closer to returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gonsolin made the start in what was his second of his rehab assignment. The right-hander was efficient and nearly perfect in his outing.

Gonsolin ended up pitching 3.1 innings while allowing just one unearned run on one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts on 46 pitches. Due to his efficiency, he was able to get into the fourth inning.

The lone run came after a leadoff walk and stolen base in the fourth inning. After Gonsolin exited the game, a fielding error by prospect Alex Freeland allowed the run to score.

In total, Gonsolin faced 11 hitters, striking out seven of them, including the first two he faced and the last batter of his outing.

Gonsolin is almost ready to re-join the Dodgers rotation, and that could be a possibility with them needing another starter next week.

However, he still needs to continue building up his arm as he has yet to throw more than 50 pitches in a game.

The Dodgers prefer that to happen at Triple-A and wanted him to make at least three rehab starts, but the circumstances could push them to consider his next start at the MLB level.

Overall in his two rehab assignments, Gonsolin has thrown five innings without allowing an earned run, striking out eight, walking three, giving up two hits and posting a 1.00 WHIP.

Evan Phillips less successful in rehab outing

Evan Phillips also got into the game, making his third rehab appearance, but the results were not ideal.

Phillips pitched 0.2 innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with just one strikeout on 25 pitches.

Taking over in the sixth inning, Phillips struck out the first batter he faced before the next hitter reached on an error.

From there, Phillips allowed three straight singles that led to the two runs scoring.

Phillips retired the next hitter on a sacrifice fly that allowed the third run to score before he exited the game.

Although the results weren’t good, the most important thing is his health coming out of the game. The right-hander has now thrown 2.2 innings with four strikeouts, a 2.25 WHIP and 6.75 ERA.

With three rehab appearances already made, it would not be surprising to see his next outing come with the Dodgers.
