Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Hopeful To Avoid Injured List After Aggravating Right Ankle

Tommy Edman has dealt with multiple injuries during the 2025 season, which have limited his impact for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Edman first landed on the 10-day injured list in early May with right ankle inflammation, which cost him roughly two weeks. He then tweaked it again in early June while facing the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium but remained on the roster.

Then at the start of July, Edman suffered a fracture in his right pinky toe as a result of a foul ball. Though, he again managed to avoid going on the IL.

Edman was scheduled to start for the Dodgers on Monday when they began their series with the Cincinnati Reds, but he was a late scratch due to his ankle issue coming back up.

The 30-year-old could possibly land on the IL once again, but he’s hoping to avoid that and be back in the lineup for Tuesday’s game, he said on SportsNet LA:

“I felt fine until yesterday. I had just a little tweak of it and didn’t feel great today, but hoping to get back in there tomorrow.”

With the ankle injury reoccurring for a second time, it may be something Edman has to play through for the remainder of the season.

But this time, he feels it’s more minor than the previous issues and has taken a precautionary route to avoid further damaging it, which he hopes will allow him to get passed the injury:

“I hope not. Hopefully it doesn’t come up again. I feel like it’s not a big deal at all. It was just at a point where I didn’t feel like I was going to be able to run at full speed today, so got some good treatment and hopefully I’ll be back tomorrow.”

The Dodgers have been cautious with Edman and largely avoided playing him in the outfield due to his right ankle trouble. The expectation was he would see more time in center field once he was fully healed from his previous issue, but Edman has only made 19 appearances in center field this season.

Edman has also stolen just three bases, which has taken away some value from his game. From 2021-2023, Edman stole at least 27 bases in each season.

He has also seen his production drop on offense, hitting just .225/.280/.389 after a hot start to the season.

Dodgers calling up Alex Freeland?

The Dodgers are likely going to have to make an IL move on Tuesday with Edman and Hyeseong Kim both dealing with injuries. Kim has been playing through a left shoulder issue for the past week.

With that, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed top infield prospect Alex Freeland is joining the club in Cincinnati. They have not yet decided who, of if, they’ll make a move to add Freeland, but it seems they will.

With Edman hoping to be back in the lineup on Tuesday, Kim landing on the IL seems to be the most likely scenario.
