Dodgers News: Ryan Pepiot Pitching Against Padres After Opener

The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to recall Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City to pitch in the series finale against the San Diego Padres.

Pepiot isn’t eligible to get recalled due to 15 days not passing since being optioned, which means he is replacing an injured player on the active roster. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts initially declined to provide specifics on the player involved in the corresponding roster move, but later revealed it is David Price.

Pepiot being dropped into the Dodgers rotation pushes other starters back for an extra day of rest before their next outing. Though, Caleb Ferguson is being used as an opener on Sunday night.

Andrew Heaney had been listed as the probable for Sunday, but he now will start the first game of the series with the San Francisco Giants.

Pepiot is 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA over seven starts for the Dodgers. He made three starts in August, going 1-0 with a 5.43 ERA in those outings. Pepiot is coming off a quality start in which he held the Miami Marlins to just two runs over six innings and collected a career-high seven strikeouts.

The right-hander last pitched for OKC on Aug. 27, and was scheduled to start for the Dodgers’ top Minor League affiliate on Sunday.

Dodgers pitching staff injuries

Tony Gonsolin and Brusdar Graterol both received encouraging news after undergoing respective MRIs. Gonsolin started his throwing program as he works to return from a right forearm strain, and Graterol believes he can resume playing catch in the next few days.

Graterol also anticipates rest being enough to recover from right elbow inflammation. An MRI didn’t reveal any cause for concern with the ligaments in Graterol’s throwing elbow.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers welcomed back Blake Treinen from the 60-day IL on Friday. Treinen revealed he suffered a torn capsule in his right shoulder that nearly required season-ending surgery.
