Former Dodgers Relief Pitcher AJ Ramos Signs With Rockies

The Colorado Rockies announced the signing of former Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher AJ Ramos to a Minor League contract. He was also added to their 60-man player pool.

The Dodgers originally signed Ramos to a Minor League deal just before the start of Summer Camp. He is looking to make a return after last pitching for the New York Mets during the 2018 season. Ramos missed all of last year while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum.

He spent parts of six seasons with the Miami Marlins, where he became an All-Star in 2016. Over those six years Ramos collected 92 saves while yielding a 2.78 ERA and averaged 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

After a solid Summer Camp in which he showed he was healthy while also flashing potential of returning to his pre-injury form, Ramos did not make the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster as they wanted to give him more time to get game ready.

In what was a bit of a surprise though, the bullpen started off the year as the best in baseball with just about every reliever proving worthy of a roster spot. Because of that, Ramos never got the opportunity to be called up and was eventually granted his release from the organization.

Shortly after becoming a free agent, Ramos wanted to be released was because the signed with the Chicago Cubs, although his time in that organization did not last long.

As it currently stands, the Rockies are in the mix for the final postseason spot in the National League. Their bullpen has struggled for most of the year, so they certainly can use Ramos’ services.

They are taking a page out of the Dodgers’ book as L.A. signed reliever Jake McGee after he was released by Colorado at the beginning of the season and the lefty has been one of the better arms in the bullpen this season.

Rockies break Dodgers’ series win streak

Before welcoming the Rockies to town for a three-game series this past weekend, the Dodgers were the only team in baseball that had yet to lose a series this season.

While L.A. took the opener on Friday night, the Rockies bounced back to win the next two and end the Dodgers’ streak, which was big for their postseason hopes.
