The Los Angeles Dodgers are going to have a new double play combination for the 2024 season with Mookie Betts and Gavin Lux anchoring the middle of the infield.

Betts is taking over as the everyday second baseman after a long career as one of the best right fielders in baseball. Meanwhile, Lux will resume starting shortstop duties after missing all of last year due to a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee.

Betts and Lux have been teammates for parts of four seasons, but never double play partners up the middle. Despite this, Betts does not take believe it will take long to develop chemistry with Lux, via SportsNet LA:

“I don’t think very long at all. We already have a really good relationship. I have a really good relationship with everyone, but especially G. I don’t think it will take long. Probably a week or so. I think we’ll be fine.”

Betts saw extended work at second base last season for the first time in his MLB career and posted above-average marks in several defensive metrics.

Lux is a natural shortstop and will be getting his first starting job at the position. His last full season came in 2022, when he hit .276/.346/.399 with 33 extra-base hits while appearing at three different positions.

While the Dodgers have high expectations for Lux, they can afford to ease him back in due to their deep roster and Miguel Rojas being able to play shortstop if needed. Betts will also presumably see some time in right field, but those chances may be more limited.

Gavin Lux cleared mental & physical hurdles from knee injury

Lux underwent surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his right knee last year, which led to a long rehab process that continued into the offseason.

The 26-year-old recently said he is no longer dealing with physical or mental hurdles from the knee injury after some initial challenges.

Lux was also fully cleared medically to participate in all baseball activities, so he will have no restrictions with games beginning soon.
