Dodgers News: Logan Forsythe Optimistic As Uncertainty Clouds Toe Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers once again struggled to hit with runners in scoring position on Tuesday and lost a third straight game. But of greater concern is the health of Logan Forsythe (right big toe) and Justin Turner (left hand).

Colorado Rockies rookie Kyle Freeland plunked both infielders; Forsythe in the first inning and Turner in the fifth. Both were immediately checked on after getting hit, and each remained in the game. Forsythe was eventually pinch-hit for in the third, while Turner played all nine innings.

Forsythe was diagnosed with a right toe contusion. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the x-ray results were “inconclusive,” and additional testing is expected Wednesday.

While the signs may be ominous, Forsythe, who’s dealt with foot trouble throughout his career, is keeping a positive mindset, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

“I’m always optimistic. We’ll wake up tomorrow and see how it goes. There’s a lot of small bones in the feet and I’ve dealt with foot problems in the past,” said Forsythe. “They’re going to get a couple more eyes on it and re-evaluate tomorrow. It’s definitely bruised, right on the joint that allows weight bearing. I’ve had surgeries on both feet, sesamoid removals. Those are out and it’s nothing to do with those.”

Should Forsythe miss an extended period of time, the Dodgers presumably will turn to Chase Utley for the bulk of starting duties at second base. Kiké Hernandez may also fill in, and the Dodgers could recall an infielder — perhaps Chris Taylor — from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The 30-year-old Forsythe has endured a difficult stretch over the past four games. He was removed Saturday due to tightness in his right hamstring, which caused him to miss the following day’s game.

Forsythe returned to the lineup Monday, though Roberts preferred to sit him an additional night. Forsythe has not shown any lingering effects of the hamstring issue.

Turner’s availability isn’t in as much doubt, considering x-rays on his hand came back negative. Though, it would not come as a surprise if Turner is given a night off. After concluding their homestand Wednesday, the Dodgers have an off day before beginning a seven-game road trip Friday.
