Dodgers News: Kiké Hernández ‘Infuriated By What’s Happening In Our Country And Our City’

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the early portion of their longest homestand of the season, which is being played against a backdrop of unrest in several communities due to federal immigration raids ordered by President Trump.

Protests began while the Dodgers were playing the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, and manager Dave Roberts said he hoped the highly-anticipated matchup could provide a distraction to the dramatic series of events.

When asked more directly about the ICE raids taking place throughout the greater Los Angeles area, Roberts on Friday said he didn’t have any thoughts on the matter.

“No, I don’t. Honestly, I don’t know enough to be quite honest with you. I know that you’re having to bring people in and deport people,” Roberts answered. “And just kind of all the unrest is certainly unsettling for everyone. But I haven’t done enough and can’t speak intelligently on it.”

The Dodgers as an organization have not issued a statement over the federal activity that’s raised tensions and struck fear into several minorities. Dodgers executive vice president and chief marketing officer Lon Rosen told Dylan Hernández of the L.A. Times that the organization would not be commenting on such matters.

Other members of the franchise, including players, had remained silent until roughly an hour before first pitch on Saturday when Kiké Hernández took to Instagram to express his sadness and more thoughts.

Hernández, who was born in Puerto Rico, previously did not shy away from sharing his criticism of treatment carried out by the Trump administration. Late in 2017, Hernández actively used his Twitter account in effort to raise awareness and financial support for Puerto Rico after it was ravaged by hurricanes.

During that time, Hernández was critical of President Trump over what he felt was a lack of the administration’s understanding of the severity of the conditions in Puerto rico.

Hernández wrote about his connection to Los Angeles while touching on his anger with families being separated.

“I may not be Born & Raised, but this city adopted me as one of their own. I am saddened and infuriated by what’s happening in our country and our city,” Hernández wrote in the caption for his Instagram post.

“Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me and shown me nothing but kindness and love. This is my second home. And I cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart. ALL people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights. #CityOfImmigrants”

Hernández also wrote his message in Spanish.
