Dodgers News: Justin Turner Commends Brandon Nimmo For ‘Great Play’ On Robbing Home Run

The Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t have much success against Jacob deGrom in a 2-1 loss to the New York Mets, but the outcome could have flipped if Brandon Nimmo did not rob Justin Turner of what may have been a game-tying solo home run.

Turner had the Dodgers’ first hit off deGrom — a one-out single in the fifth inning — and he nearly pulled them even with a drive to center field in the seventh. Turner sent a 100 mph fastball from deGrom in the air toward center field, which required Nimmo to break into an immediate sprint.

Nimmo tracked the flight of the ball before leaping at the perfect moment and making the catch with his left arm extended over the top of the wall. deGrom tipped his cap in appreciation and Nimmo let out a show of emotions as Citi Field erupted.

Turner has long held a pragmatic view of positive and negative outcomes on the field, and he credited Nimmo for his highlight-reel catch that took a home run away, via Juan Toribio of MLB.com:

“You do what you can. Do everything right, then it’s out of your control,” Turner said. “It was a great play by Nimmo. Not a whole lot you can do about it.”

Nimmo’s catch was key to deGrom getting through seven innings with just one run allowed. Turner had one of the Dodgers’ three hits off the Mets ace, with the other two a solo home run by Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman’s single.

Nimmo previously made impressive plays this season with a diving catch during the Mets’ combined no-hitter in April, and a leaping grab to rob the Miami Marlins’ Jesús Sánchez of extra bases in July.

Even with being robbed of a home run, Turner is batting .316/.376/.447 with seven doubles, one home run and 15 RBI since the All-Star break. However, hitting a home run on the road has continued to evade Turner this season.

Justin Turner Foundation 5K

With the Dodgers returning home this weekend, Justin and Kourtney Turner are hosting the second annual Turner Trot 5K. Proceeds from the event will benefit their Justin Turner Foundation, which aims to provide for homeless veterans, children (and their families) battling life-altering illnesses and diseases, and youth baseball organizations.

The 2022 Turner Trot begins at Dodger Stadium and concludes at the Dream Center, where the Turners are heavily involved in giving back to the community. This year’s race also offers a virtual option for fans not in Los Angeles.
