Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Uncertain How Deep Clayton Kershaw Will Pitch In Start Vs. Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting rotation receives another boost on Saturday when Clayton Kershaw returns from the 10-day disabled list and takes the mound against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Kershaw was initially expected to make a rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, but inclement weather derailed those plans. Despite rain in the forecast for New York as well, he instead returns to the Dodgers’ rotation after missing the last three weeks with a lower back strain — his third back injury in as many years.

However, Kershaw managed to make his way back in nearly half the amount of time when compared to last season’s similar back issue. The three-time Cy Young Award isn’t sure himself why he healed quicker this time around.

Despite Kershaw’s relatively quick recovery, the club will continue operating cautiously with their ace. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is undecided on how long of a leash he’ll extend Kershaw in his return, per Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times:

“We don’t know how much he’s going to pitch. I don’t want to put a limit on him. Obviously there is a limitation with Clayton, and I’ll make that decision.”

Considering Kershaw has missed nearly two months with two separate injuries this season, it would be wise to ease his workload for the time being.

The Dodgers’ rotation has thrived for the most part in Kershaw’s absence, so his presence will further bolster a starting corps that recently saw the returns of Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda as well.

Kershaw looks to pick up where he left off in eight starts this season. The 30-year-old has compiled a 2.76 ERA, 3.47 FIP and 1.12 WHIP over 49 innings pitched with 53 strikeouts to 11 walks.

He completed just five innings on May 31 after missing nearly one month, coming out due to back tightness that required a second stint on the disabled list.
