Dodgers Optimistic Andrew Heaney’s Shoulder Trouble Not Long-Term Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a key member of their starting rotation this week as Andrew Heaney was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left shoulder discomfort.

Heaney was scheduled to start Saturday against the San Diego Padres, which now will be filled by Tyler Anderson. “Just shoulder soreness,” manager Dave Roberts said of the severity of Heaney’s injury.

“We didn’t get any imaging, he feels a little bit better, but to have him make that start, we just felt to IL, take it out of his hand, give him some rest. He’ll miss a start and then we’ll see how it goes. Don’t expect it to be long term, but right now it was a pretty easy decision.”

Heaney followed his impressive Dodgers debut by throwing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball against the Cincinnati Reds this past Sunday. It was shortly after that he started experiencing shoulder soreness.

“It was the day after,” Roberts said of when Heaney started feeling discomfort. “After the start he felt great, and then the next day he just felt something in his shoulder, so we addressed.”

Heaney has dealt with shoulder tightness in the past but Roberts doesn’t believe his current injury will keep him sidelined for a significant amount of time. “We’re confident from the medical staff, but I don’t know comparing to his past shoulder issues. I have no idea,” Roberts said.

Roberts unsure when Heaney will resume baseball activities

Heaney felt discomfort when trying to play catch Wednesday and will be shut down from baseball activities for an undetermined period. “He tried to play catch [Wednesday], and it didn’t feel great, which ultimately led us to make that decision,” Roberts said.

“So when he’ll pick up a baseball again, I’m not sure.”
