Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger was named the National League Rookie of the month for May. He’s the first Dodgers player to win the award since Corey Seager in June 2016.

Bellinger made his MLB debut on April 25 against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. He struggled to find his footing early but after one full week with the Dodgers, was named NL Player of the Week.

The 21-year-old batted .245/.314/.566 with five doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 27 RBI in 28 games (27 starts) last month. Overall, Bellinger enters play Saturday hitting .252/.325/.578 with six doubles, 12 home runs and 30 RBI in 36 games.

He’s gone through a bit of a lull, particularly during the four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

When the Dodgers called up their top hitting prospect, it was under the notion he would only remain with the team for a brief stretch. However, injuries and Bellinger’s performance have earned him consistent playing time; whether at first base or in left field.

Considering Andre Ethier’s slow recovery and season-ending injury Andrew Toles suffered, it’s probable Bellinger will remain with the Dodgers for the duration of the season.

Prior to joining Los Angeles, he hit .343/.429/.627 with four doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI in 18 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

In addition to Bellinger receiving honors, Alex Wood was named NL Pitcher of the Month.
