For as much dedication and work players put in to reaching the Majors, there are times when we’re reminded baseball is just a game.

Those instances unfortunately tend to involve a tragic occurrence more times than not, and that was the case for Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Josh Ravin. His older brother, Joel, was shot five times outside his home in West Hills, Calif., around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 4.

According to Kennedy Ryan of KTLA 5 News, two men were arrested in connection of the incident:

Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting of Joel Ravin, the older brother of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Ravin, who was shot five times outside his West Hills home, police announced Monday.

Josh Ravin sent out multiple tweets the night of the shooting, with one stating the family and Los Angeles Police Department knew the identity of the shooter, and another thanking supporters for their well wishes.

Randall Stinson was arrested on Oct. 20 and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Stinson pleaded not guilty.

Ravin attended Chatsworth High School and was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB draft. He spent eight seasons in the Reds’ farm system before joining the Dodgers organization in 2014.

Including making his MLB debut June 2, Ravin appeared in nine games with the Dodgers this season. He had 12 strikeouts, a 6.75 ERA and 1.82 WHIP over 9.1 innings pitched.

Ravin underwent sports hernia surgery on Sept. 9 and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
