Dodgers Lose Cody Bellinger To Injury, But Adrian Gonzalez Starts Late Surge Against Tigers

In his second game off the 60-day disabled list, Adrian Gonzalez broke a scoreless tie by lining an RBI single into right field, which helped broke the seal for the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed at least one baserunner in each of his five innings and exited with the game knotted in a scoreless tie. His effort was bested by reigning American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer, who carried a shutout into the seventh inning.

Fulmer was let down by his defense, as Nicholas Castellanos failed to locate and catch a relatively routine pop-up. The two-base error left Curtis Granderson on second base, and Yasmani Grandal extended the inning by working a full count and drawing a walk.

That was followed by Gonzalez’s bullet of a go-ahead base hit. Armed with a lead, Ross Stripling completed a second scoreless inning out of the bullpen. He didn’t allow any hits, issued one walk, and collected four strikeouts in the relief appearance.

Chase Utley’s leadoff walk in the eighth eventually led to a run scored on Justin Turner’s two-out single into center field. Yasmani Grandal’s solo home run in the ninth provided further insurance.

Brandon Morrow and Kenley Jansen each threw a scoreless inning to finish out the game, with Jansen converting his 33rd save of the season.

Ryu’s biggest brush with trouble came in the bottom of the third when Jose Iglesias led off with an infield single and Ian Kinsler drew a one-out walk. After a deep fly ball allowed both runners to tag, Ryu walked Justin Upton to load the bases.

Miguel Cabrera was unable to capitalize, however, as he struck out swinging on three pitches. Kinsler doubled with one out in the sixth inning, only to be stranded by Mikie Mahtook and Upton.

Ryu finished with only three hits allowed, but issued four walks while recording as many strikeouts. Ryu has now gone five innings or less in six of his last 10 starts, yielding a 3.07 ERA and tallying 56 strikeouts in 55.2 innings pitched during that span.

While the Dodgers earned a 13th consecutive win in Interleague play, it came at some cost, as Cody Bellinger suffered a mild ankle sprain in the sixth inning.
