The Philadelphia Phillies were one win away from advancing to the World Series for the second consecutive year, but lost Game 7 of the National League Championship Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With that, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain the only team to win consecutive NL pennants since 2009. The Dodgers accomplished the feat during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, becoming the first club to advance to the Fall Classic in back-to-back years since the 2008-2009 Phillies.

The Dodgers’ trip to the World Series in 2017 was their first since 1988. They punched their ticket that year after sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLDS and eliminating the defending champion Chicago Cubs in the NLCS.

The Dodgers would go on to lose the World Series in seven games to the Houston Astros. The matchup was considered one of the best in MLB history at the time, but it is now overshadowed by Houston’s sign-stealing scandal.

L.A. returned to the Fall Classic in 2018 after eliminating the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers in the first two rounds of the postseason. However, the Dodgers were overmatched by the Boston Red Sox and lost in five games.

The Dodgers finally got over the hump during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season when they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win their first World Series title since 1988.

World Series streak involving Dodgers and Astros snapped

While one streak involving the Dodgers remained intact, another came to an end. This year’s World Series is being played without the Dodgers or Astros for the first time since 2017.

The Dodgers made appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2020; while the Astros represented the American League in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

The Astros were one win away from heading back to the Fall Classic this year, but lost two consecutive games at home to the Texas Rangers in the AL Championship Series.
