The Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Angel City Football Club, Los Angeles Chargers, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Angels, LAFC, Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Sparks combined to donate $450,000 in relief efforts for those impacted by the Hawaii wildfires.

The 12 Los Angeles professional sports franchises made their donation to the American Red Cross. Volunteers are working with the Hawaiian Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) to help move displaced residents into hotels rather than congregate shelters.

The Maui wildfires are the deadliest in the United States over the last century, as they caused more than 100 confirmed deaths and more than 1,000 citizens remain unaccounted for. The 2018 Camp fire that ravaged through Paradise in Northern California killed 85.

Crews continue to search the debris of more than 2,000 burnt homes and businesses.

The 2,170-acre Lahaina fire was the most-destructive, though the County of Maui said it was contained at 89% as of Wednesday night.

Additional Maui wildfires continue to burn, including the 1,081-acre Olinda fire, which was 85% contained as of Wednesday; the 202-acre Kula fire, which was 80% contained.

U.S. president Joe Biden and the first lady are scheduled to visit Maui on Monday. President Biden signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Hawaii last week.

Although California and Hawaii are separated by more than 2,000 miles, they share a connection in large part through sports.

Last year, the Dodgers opened a baseball and softball training academy in Waipahu.

Perhaps most notably, the Lakers held training camps in Hawaii for more than 25 years. They additionally have played several preseason games in Honolulu and last year held a Showtime reunion in Maui.

Dodgers donation efforts

In 2018, Dodgers team owner Mark Walter announced a $2 million donation to Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico, joining Kiké Hernández to support rebuilding efforts following the devastation left behind by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

In 2017, the Dodgers provided for those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and earthquake in Mexico by pledging $100,000 to the American Red Cross in support of relief efforts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation also came to the aid of those in need during the pandemic in 2020 by providing essential services and donations.
