The Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to terms with 22 players (12 pitchers, four infielders, three outfields and three catchers) on the first day of 2020-21 international signing period. The group was headlined by Wilman Diaz, Rayne Doncon and Jesus Galiz.

Diaz, a 17-year-old out of Venezuela, was ranked the No. 3 prospect and top shortstop in the 2020-21 international free agent class. He is from the same program that touted catching prospect Diego Cartaya played at prior to signing with the Dodgers.

Doncon, also 17, is viewed as one of the top infielders who trains at the Chal Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic. Doncon has garnered recognition for his power potential at the plate.

Galiz is the top catching prospect and No. 8 overall for the 2020-21 international signing period. He too is from Venezuela and has earned praise for his receiving skills since making the change from infielder to catcher.

Galiz recently worked with Kansas City Royals backstop Salvador Perez, who long was considered one of the top defensive catchers in baseball. Galiz signing with the Dodgers had been expected for several weeks now, but he once was a lean toward the New York Yankees.

The international signing period historically begins in July, but MLB pushed this class back to January and it will run through Dec. 15, 2021. Unlike previous years, teams are not allowed to trade bonus pool space.

The 2021-2022 international signing period also will not begin until January of next year.

The Dodgers fell into the middle of the pack in terms of bonus pool money for the 2020-21 class. They can spend as much as $5,348,100 on international prospects, along with 11 other teams. The club did not announce signing bonuses.

Half of the Dodgers’ signings were out of Venezuela (11), with five prospects from the Dominican Republic, two from Panama, two from Mexico, and one each from Curacao and Colombia.
