Dodgers Injury Updates: X-Rays On Hyun-Jin Ryu’s Foot Negative, Scott Kazmir Impresses, No Timetable For Brandon McCarthy

Hyun-Jin Ryu reported some pain in his foot one day after being struck by a line drive. X-rays following Ryu’s outing on Wednesday night were negative, he’s receiving treatment and expecting to the avoid the disabled list at present time.

“I think it’s more of a bruise than a fracture,” Ryu said Thursday. He doesn’t anticipate the need to wear a walking boot while pain and soreness remains in the left foot.

“When he makes his next start, we don’t know,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think in a couple of days we’ll make a decision (on a potential disabled list stint). Hopefully, it’s not a DL situation. We’ll monitor him.”

Ryu will need to play catch and throw a bullpen session prior to the Dodgers determining a course of action. Though, the southpaw in theory will not be needed until late next week.

The Dodgers have set their rotation so Alex Wood takes the ball Friday, Rich Hill on Saturday, Kenta Maeda on Sunday, and Clayton Kershaw starts Tuesday.

What may factor into the club’s decision with Ryu is how Scott Kazmir progresses. He threw a bullpen session on Thursday and is scheduled for a second rehab start with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday.

“He was a lot better than he was before,” said Roberts of Kazmir’s bullpen. “He’s worked really hard to get back. There was a change in his delivery to simplify things and just repeat it. Life in the zone was good, velocity was up.”

The immediate future isn’t nearly as clear for Brandon McCarthy, who was put on the 10-day disabled list June 26 with tendinitis in his right knee. The DL move came one day after McCarthy lost his command for an inning.

“He’s doing well. Mentally, I think he’s in a good place,” Roberts said. “The first thing would be to set up a bullpen.

“The next piece would be to get a simulated situation where it’s controlled and he can kind of work through some things. At that point in time, a potential rehab. With that, there’s really no definitive start date for him.”
