Dodgers Injury Update: Gavin Lux Encouraged By Recovery From Hamstring Strain

The Los Angeles Dodgers expect to be without Gavin Lux for a while as he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain earlier this week.

While hamstring injuries can be tricky to deal with, Lux is encouraged by his recovery so far and said his injury is a lot better than he and the club initially thought.

“Starting to make some progress, for sure. It actually feels pretty good,” Lux said. “I think I’m doing some running mechanics or some sort of sprint work [Friday]. I don’t really know what it is exactly, but it’s a pretty good indication of how things are going.”

Lux originally injured his leg in last Sunday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

“My back foot kind of got stuck and put my back leg in a weird position,” Lux explained. “That first initial step out of the box I felt my hamstring kind of tighten up and almost get a cramp feeling, if that makes sense.”

Despite the recovery going better than expected, he is not sure how long the injury will keep him out.

“Honestly I’m not too sure. I know hamstrings are tricky as far as the recovery and everybody is different,” Lux said. “So to be honest I’m not sure what the next step is. We’ll see how [Friday] goes and really just take it day by day, step by step, and pretty much go from there.”

Lux learning while he’s out

The 23-year-old said he could use this time on the IL to take a step back and learn, instead of just sitting around and not getting better.

“Obviously I want to be out there playing, getting at-bats and trying to help the team win. But for the time being I’m going to be out there watching the game and I could still sit up on the rail to talk to Kersh, Walker and our hitting guys during the game,” Lux said.

“There’s ways you can take advantage of it, and that’s probably a better way to look at it as opposed to, ‘Oh, I’m on the IL. Woe is me.’ You get a chance to get out there and watch the game, and you can learn still.”

However, Lux has not benefited from that yet.

“Not necessarily,” Lux said when asked if he has already benefitted from watching. “It’s kind of just the normal ball talks you have during the game. Eventually, it could help. I’m not sure yet.”
