When the Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tommy Edman on the 10-day injured list last Saturday, it was backdated to April 30, which made him eligible to return during their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The team initially believed that Edman’s right ankle inflammation was not too severe and expected him to be back in the lineup once he was eligible to get activated on Saturday.
However, that no longer is the case. According to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Edman is dealing with lingering right ankle trouble and he now won’t return until after the road trip:
Roberts also said “it’s unlikely” that utility man Tommy Edman will be ready to return from his ankle injury this weekend as hoped.
Edman stretched a tendon in his ankle on a slide last week. He has been able to continue hitting in the cage but still feels discomfort when he tries to run.
“It’s just not responding. It’s just kind of slow moving,” Roberts said.
Coupled with the news of Teoscar Hernández’s strained left groin, the Dodgers will likely be without two significant bats from their lineup for at least a handful of more games. That’s if Edman’s ankle begins to respond well enough that he can return on Tuesday.
Hernández’s .600 slugging percentage is third best in baseball and leads all players with 34 RBI. Edman is second on the Dodgers with eight home runs, trailing only Shohei Ohtani (10) and Hernández (nine).
However, it is not all bad news for Edman as he is still able to hit with little to no issue. That certainly suggests he will return before Hernández, who is expected to be on the IL for multiple weeks.
How Dodgers have filled in for Tommy Edman
Hyeseong Kim was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday to replace Edman’s roster spot.
In the past six games, the Dodgers have had four different players start at second base. Kiké Hernández has made two of those starts, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor have each started once, and Kim started Monday and Tuesday.
