Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Leaves Finale Of Road Trip With Sprained Right Ankle

When the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Tommy Edman last year, he was on the injured list while recovering not only from offseason wrist surgery but also a sprained right ankle suffered while on a rehab assignment.

Edman went on to make a significant impact for the Dodgers, which included winning National League Championship Series MVP, and was signed to a five-year, $74 million contract extension before the 2025 season began. Unfortunately for Edman and the Dodgers, this year has only brought about more ankle trouble.

The latest of which came in the fifth inning on Sunday when Edman’s ground ball hit off second base and carried into center field for a single. Edman made a wide turn at first base and then limped back toward the bag.

Dodgers first base coach Chris Woodward immediately gestured for a trainer, who went to speak with Edman before he gingerly walked off the field. Miguel Rojas entered as a pinch-runner and remained in the game at second base.

The Dodgers announced Edman came out of the game due to a sprained right ankle.

It marked a second instance on the Dodgers’ road trip that Edman’s right ankle became an issue. He aggravated it while running the bases in the series opener against the Boston Red Sox, and lingering discomfort caused Edman to be scratched from the lineup last Monday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there was consideration to putting Edman on the 10-day injured list, but that instead wound up being the case with Hyeseong Kim because of left shoulder bursitis.

Edman previously did land on the IL in May with right ankle inflammation, which cost him roughly two weeks. He then tweaked it again in early June while facing the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium but remained on the roster.

Edman also has been playing through a hairline fracture in the pinky toe on his right foot.

Max Muncy can replace Tommy Edman

Although Edman avoided a second stint on the injured list last week, there figures to be a different course of action as the Dodgers begin their homestand.

Not only would the 30-year-old seemingly benefit from an opportunity to rest his ailing ankle, but Edman going on the IL can be offset in some sense with Max Muncy essentially being ready to return after completing his rehab assignment.

Roberts said before Sunday’s game that Muncy was going to be the designated hitter for Triple-A Oklahoma City, and the Dodgers would then evaluate which day to activate him.
