Dodgers Injuries: Edwin Rios Undergoing Season-Ending Surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Edwin Rios will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. The operation will be completed next week and Rios is expected to make a full recovery by the start of Spring Training in 2022.

Rios was placed on the 10-day injured list last week due to right shoulder inflammation. He was mired in an 0-for-32 skid with four walks, 12 strikeouts and one hit by pitch at the time of being sidelined.

Rios’ last hit was a one-out single in the fifth inning on April 13. He flied out two innings later to begin the offensive drought.

“It’s something going on with his right shoulder that’s really affecting his swing. Eddie is not a guy that’s going to make excuses, but that’s kind of what he’s dealing with,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said at the time.

“I think it’s something that’s over time been othering him and impeding his swing. I don’t know the timeline (of how long it has been an issue), though.”

On the season Rios had just four hits in 51 at-bats. He homered against the Oakland Athletics on April 6 and admitted there had been some internal pressure mounting. Though, Rios added he felt better results were on the horizon.

Despite Rios’ ongoing struggles, Roberts remained confident in the left-handed slugger. “The at-bats off the bench are always tough, but he’s competing, he’s taking good swings,” Roberts said last month.

“He’ll get some results. We’ve got a long way to go. I’ve just got to keep him involved. He’s doing just fine.”

Losing Rios for the season places further strain on a Dodgers bench that has collectively struggled this year. The group currently is without Zach McKinstry as he continues to recover from a right oblique strain.

Dodgers encouraged with May’s surgery

Dustin May underwent his Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, which Roberts said he was told “couldn’t have gone any better.” Roberts added he intends to speak with May in the coming days.
