The Los Angeles Dodgers hit four home runs and received another strong start from Tony Gonsolin, but needed to be rescued by Alex Vesia in a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers extended their winning streak to four games and have won seven of eight on their homestand thus far.

Mookie Betts got the Dodgers going early with a 33rd career leadoff home run, and fourth such long ball this season. Gavin Lux extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the second inning.

Justin Turner then helped create more separation with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Turner extended his hitting streak to six games and is batting .524 with four home runs in his last eight.

Three innings after being hit by a pitch in his left hand, Betts drove a solo shot to center field for his 22nd career multi-home run game. That also gave Betts 20 home runs on the season.

Gonsolin protected the lead throughout his seven innings of work and held the Cubs to two runs that came on Christopher Morel’s homer in the fifth. That was followed by the right-hander retiring the final seven batters faced.

Gonsolin improved to 11-0 on the season, becoming the first Dodgers pitcher to start the season with such a record since Alex Wood in 2017.

Dodgers injuries

Brusdar Graterol was the first reliever to after Gonsolin but he was removed after throwing just four pitches due to right side soreness. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Graterol was dealing with a cramp in his right ribs area, but a stint on the 15-day injured list was not ruled out.
