Dodgers Highlights: 6-Run 3rd Inning, Freddie Freeman’s Home Run Vs. Cubs

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed their first season series sweep of the Chicago Cubs in franchise history with another come-from-behind victory in a high-scoring affair.

Julio Urías hit two batters and was hurt by Gavin Lux not making a play in left field during a disastrous first inning. After Nico Hoerner’s RBI single gave the Cubs an early lead, P.J. Higgins broke the game open with a grand slam.

The Dodgers then quickly went to work on getting back in the game, with Will Smith, Justin Turner and Max Muncy all driving in a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Cubs’ lead to just 5-3.

However, the Cubs added those back when David Bote hit a three-run home run off Phil Bickford in the third inning.

But the Dodgers came back to take the lead with a massive third inning that was started by Freddie Freeman’s leadoff double that knocked Cubs starter Drew Smyly out of the game.

Freeman came around to score on Smith’s RBI groundout and Lux’s walk with the bases loaded pulled the Dodgers to within 8-5. They drew closer when two more runs scored on Patrick Wisdom’s throwing error after fielding a routine ground ball that should have ended the inning.

Trea Turner then added to the Cubs’ woes with a go-ahead two-run single. Freeman provided breathing room with a solo homer in the sixth inning and another RBI in the seventh inning with a single to drive in Lux.

The Cubs got one back in the eighth with a homer from Nelson Velazquez, but Brusdar Graterol then shut the door with a two-inning save.

Dodgers add two more All-Stars

The Dodgers added two more All-Stars when the National League reserves and pitchers were announced during the game as Clayton Kershaw and Tony Gonsolin joined starting position players Mookie Betts and Trea Turner.

Kershaw was named to the All-Star team for a ninth time. The 34-year-old has only thrown 63.2 innings this season, but he has been highly effective, posting a 2.40 ERA and 2.57 FIP while striking out 27.6% of batters and walking 4.8% with 1.9 WAR.

Gonsolin earned his first career All-Star selection thanks to a breakout season. The 28-year-old leads MLB with a 1.62 ERA to go along with a 3.35 FIP across 88.2 innings while striking out 24% of hitters, walking 6.9%, and accumulating 1.7 WAR.

Roberts was hoping for Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Julio Urías to earn selections to the NL team, but none of them were selected.
