Dodgers News: Buddy Kennedy Elects Free Agency After Clearing Waivers

Buddy Kennedy elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the week.

Kennedy has decided to try his luck with another organization after the Dodgers sent him outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City. It was the second time Kennedy has been designated for assignment this month, with the Toronto Blue Jays doing so on Aug. 12.

The Dodgers claimed Kennedy off waivers three days later and he was added onto their active roster as a result of Max Muncy going on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 right oblique strain.

Kennedy appeared in seven games for the Dodgers, all of them coming at third base. In 17 at-bats, he collected one hit and one RBI.

In total, this was the third time Kennedy has been DFA’d in 2025. He began the season with the Philadelphia Phillies and appeared in four games before electing free agency and signing a Minor League contract with the Blue Jays.

The Dodgers were the fifth organization Kennedy has joined since being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Kennedy made his Major League debut for the Diamondbacks in 2022, playing 30 games for the club and hitting .217/.287/.325 in 83 at-bats. Kennedy has had limited opportunities in the Majors thus far, with just seven more games played in the past three seasons combined when compared to his initial 2022 season.

Why did Dodgers DFA Buddy Kennedy?

The Dodgers designated Kennedy for assignment on Monday in order to make room for Kiké Hernández, who was activated from the 10-day injured list after a seven-week absence.

Hernández had been out since July 6 because of left elbow inflammation. The Dodgers initially believed he would return shortly after the All-Star break, but Hernández continued to deal with lingering trouble.
