The Los Angeles Dodgers offense outbursted for five home runs and 11 runs in Friday night’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners, so it looked as if they may be turning a corner after a rough week.
That didn’t look to be the case early Saturday night as they trailed 4-1 through seven innings. They rallied late though when Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger each took Alex Colome deep to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Max Muncy then took All-Star closer Edwin Diaz deep with one out in the ninth inning to tie the game at four. Diaz had converted 27 straight saves until blowing this one.
The comeback attempt was spoiled in the 10th inning though when Dodgers reliever Dylan Floro balked in the winning run in the 10th inning, resulting in a 5-4 loss for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers actually scored first against Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez in the top of the first when Bellinger drove in Joc Pederson with a two-out single. Pederson walked to begin the game.
Seattle answered quickly with four runs in the bottom half of the frame against Dodgers starter Rich Hill. Nelson Cruz drove in a run with a single, and then Kyle Seager hit a towering three-run home run to right.
Hill settled in nicely after the first though, giving up just one hit in his next five innings to make it through six innings. He struck out eight, although he wound up walked a season-high five batters.
The Dodgers bullpen was outstanding in relief of Hill, keeping the Mariners at four runs while the offense scored three to send the game into extras.
It was the 10th inning that things fell apart though when Caleb Ferguson gave up two singles while only recording one out before being replaced by Floro. The right-hander walked Cruz to load up the bases for Seager but made the slightest little nudge that resulted in the balk to bring the winning run home.
