Dodgers Clinch Home-Field Advantage Through 2017 World Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched home-field advantage through the World Series without needing to see their game through on Saturday night. The Houston Astros suffered a loss to the Boston Red Sox, then several hours later the Cleveland Indians fell to the Chicago White Sox.

This season was the first since the 2003 All-Star Game that the exhibition contest did not determine which league would have homefield in the Fall Classic. It was among several changes made under a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that was in place prior to the 2017 season.

It remains plausible the Dodgers and Indians will finish the regular season with an identical record. By virtue of winning two of three games at Progressive Field in June, Los Angeles holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Dodgers wrapped up a fifth consecutive National League West title on Sept. 22, then secured homefield through the NL playoffs four days later by defeating the San Diego Padres.

It marked the first time since 2009 the franchise held home-field advantage for the NL Championship Series. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Corey Seager were among those to stress the importance of still finishing with the best overall record.

Of the franchise’s six championships, the Dodgers only had home-field advantage in 1988. That coincidentally is the last time the organization won — and reached — the World Series.

Dodger Stadium is set to host Game 1 of the NL Division Series on Friday, Oct. 6. The Dodgers will face either the Arizona Diamondbacks or Colorado Rockies in the best-of-five matchup.

Should Los Angeles advance to the NLCS, Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14. The World Series begins Tuesday, Oct. 24. The Dodgers sold out of all tickets for potential NLDS and NLCS games at Dodger Stadium. The team has not yet made World Series tickets available for purchase.
