The Los Angeles Dodgers added right-handed pitchers Gerardo Carrillo, Andre Jackson and Edwin Uceta, as well as outfielder Zach Reks to their 40-man roster. Doing so gave the Dodgers 36 players on their 40-man roster.

By rule, Carrillo, Jackson, Reks and Uceta are protected from potentially being selected in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft that will be held Thursday, Dec. 10. Players who were signed at age 19 or older and have spent professional baseball for four years are eligible to be taken in the annual Rule 5 Draft.

So too are players who were signed at 18 and have played five years. A player selected during the Minor League phases can be placed on any roster in the Minors and does not have to be offered back to their original club.

Carrillo, Jackson, Reks and Uceta all were part of the Dodgers’ 60-man player pool this season and spent the year training at their USC site.

The Dodgers signed Carrillo out of Mexico in 2016. He spent the 2019 season with High-A Rancho Cucamonga, pitching to a 5.44 ERA but striking out 86 across 82 innings pitched over 23 games (21 starts).

Since debuting with the Dominican Summer League Dodgers in 2017, the 22-year-old has started 46 of 57 professional games.

Jackson was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 32nd round but opted to attend the University of Utah. The Dodgers then selected him in the 12th round of the 2017 Draft. Jackson is a career 10-7 with a 3.45 ERA in 43 games (42 starts).

Reks is another of the Dodgers’ 2017 selections, being drafted in the 10th round out of Kentucky. He debuted with the Quakes that year and spent last year with Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Uceta amassed 141 strikeouts and sported a 2.77 ERA during time with the Quakes and Drillers last season. He began the 2020 campaign working out with other Dodgers prospects at USC but reportedly was suspended due to a violation of coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols.

Dodgers leave Omar Estevez, other eligible prospects unprotected

The Dodgers somewhat curiously did not add infielder Omar Estevez to their 40-man roster, and now face what appears to be a high likelihood he will get taken in the Rule 5 Draft.

Along with Estevez, Donovan Casey, Parker Curry, Brett de Geus, Marshall Kasowski, Jeren Kendall, Nolan Long, Brayan Morales, Carlos Rincon, Errol Robinson, Logan Salow, Cristian Santana, Jordan Sheffield, Shea Spitzbarth, Cody Thomas, Leonel Valera, Justin Yurchak and Guillermo Zuniga are also eligible for this year’s Rule 5 Draft.
