To conclude a five-part series, the latest episode of “DodgerHeads” was a discussion with DodgerBlue.com’s Jeff Spiegel and Daniel Starkand on the current state of Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen and potential additions.
The conversation started with how the Dodgers’ bullpen has fared in recent years, and the statistics show that they actually have been really good, particularly in 2020.
Perhaps the biggest area of concern moving forward is the closer role, with Kenley Jansen in decline over the last few years. If Jansen shouldn’t be the Dodgers’ closer, which Spiegel and Starkand agreed on, then who should?
And what will Jansen’s role be moving forward as he gets set to enter the final year of his contract?
When it comes to the bullpen, the two best young arms in the Dodgers organization are Brusdar Graterol and Victor Gonzalez. But neither has any big league experience as a closer, so is 2021 too soon for either of them to take on that role?
The Dodgers have also made some additions to the bullpen in Corey Knebel and Brandon Morrow, so Spiegel and Starkand discussed what L.A. is getting in those arms and potentially how impactful they can be in 2021.
Reliever options outside Dodgers organization
While the acquisitions of Knebel and Morrow were solid, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has made it clear he is not yet done adding to the bullpen this offseason.
Looking at options outside the organization, Spiegel and Starkand talked about available free agents such as Liam Hendriks, Brad Hand, Blake Treinen and Trevor Rosenthal, which led to a bit of a disagreement as far as who is preferred.
“DodgerHeads” then finished by answered mailbag questions from fans as well as other various topics currently surrounding the Dodgers.
