Danny Duffy Expected To Fill Role Out Of Dodgers Bullpen

Looking to bolster a depleted rotation, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Max Scherzer and Danny Duffy in separate deals at the MLB trade deadline.

Scherzer of course was the biggest prize, and the three-time Cy Young Award has been nothing short of dominant in his first three starts with the organization.

As for Duffy, he still is on the mend from a left flexor strain that has kept him out of action since the middle of July. The left-hander recently was transferred to the 60-day injured list but remains on track of returning in September.

“He just started playing catch (Wednesday). Obviously looking at the calendar, I see him in the ‘pen, impacting us at some point because of the lack of time for a buildup,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Duffy’s role with the team.

“He’s feeling good. I love having him around. It’s been good for him, I think, to see our culture, his coaches, teammates, so once he does get active, he’ll be a lot more comfortable. It’s just a progression and right now he’s kind of in the early stages.”

A starter by trade, Duffy has previous experience pitching out of the bullpen. He’s made 30 career relief appearances against 204 starts, with most of them coming in the 2014-16 seasons.

Duffy is 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA, 4.17 FIP and 1.32 WHIP in 13 games this season (12 starts). He is in the final season of a five-year, $65 million contract signed with the Kansas City Royals before the 2017 campaign.

Duffy happy to pitch in any role Dodgers need

Shortly after being acquired by the Dodgers, Duffy spoke of his willingness to pitch in any capacity for the team. “I’m just at a point where I’m going to do whatever they ask of me,” he said.

“Get physically right all the way and whatever is needed, I’m all for it. They’ve got some guys that can cover some innings, and I feel like I can be helpful out of any role. The ‘pen is always exciting for me.

“I’ve always loved being in the bullpen, but whatever the future holds I’ll be ready for it.”
