Christian Yelich Hits 2 Home Runs In Brewers’ Shut Out Win Over Dodgers

Christian Yelich added to his torrid pace with a pair of solo home runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The loss snapped the Dodgers’ season-best six-game winning streak.

Relying on a bullpen game without Josh Hader available could have been a tricky proposition but Chase Anderson rose to the occasion for the Brewers. The Dodgers did have Anderson on the ropes in the first inning, as Joc Pederson led off with a single and two-out walk by A.J. Pollock put two on for Cody Bellinger.

Anderson got Bellinger to fly out to center field to end the inning. That marked the start of Anderson retiring 13 of the final 14 batters faced as he got through five scoreless innings with Pederson’s single the only hit allowed.

Anderson threw 34 pitches in the first inning but got matters back under control and finished at a season-high 82.

He was provided a 1-0 lead on Christian Yelich’s home run in the third inning. Yelich became the fastest Brewers player (22 games) ever to 30 RBI in a season and also the first in franchise history with at least 12 homers before May 1.

Yelich added to his home run total with another blast off Ryu in the sixth inning. Remarkably, each of Yelich’s 13 homers this season have come at Miller Park. Yelich has four home runs through the first three games of the series with the Dodgers.

Despite Yelich’s prolific showing, the Brewers’ lead remained just 2-0. Ryan Braun changed that in the bottom of the seventh by lining a three-run home run to center field after Yelich was intentionally walked.

The Brewers would have come away with a win even if Braun had not provided insurance.

Corey Seager’s two-out single in the sixth inning gave the Dodgers their first hit since Pederson opened the game with one. Nothing came of it, and 10 of their final 14 batters were retired in order. Three walked after Seager’s hit and David Freese reached on a fielder’s choice.

Cody Bellinger had his seven-game hitting streak but with a one-out walk in the ninth, has reached safely in all 21 starts this season.
