Carlos Correa Rumors: Free Agency Decision May Come Between Dodgers & Astros

Heading into free agency this winter, Carlos Correa and Corey Seager were expected to sit atop the crop of available shortstops.

Seager wound up signing a 10-year, $325 million contract with the Texas Rangers hours before MLB team owners imposed a lockout. He followed Max Scherzer in leaving the Dodgers as a free agent, presumed to be due in large part to a lucrative contract.

While the Dodgers easily can slide Trea Turner over to his preferred position of shortstop, the team has been linked to Correa on multiple free agents.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Correa may ultimately decide between signing with the Dodgers or Houston Astros, via “Big Time Baseball” podcast:

“Carlos Correa, the question has been is he going to get the most money, or is it going to be Seager? It will be very interesting to see. Houston is certainly still interested. They weren’t anywhere near it with their $160 million offer. I think the big question is could the Dodgers do it if they don’t don’t do Freeman? I thought they would only go for Seager and if they didn’t get Seager, they have Turner there. But with Seager not there now, so much extra money that they’re not spending, you can’t rule out the Dodgers for Correa. Those would be my two thoughts for Correa right now: Houston or the Dodgers.”

Although Correa is considered by some the best overall shortstop, it would be difficult to envision the Dodgers signing the 27-year-old even if it represents an upgrade over Seager. Nevertheless, L.A. reportedly checked in on Correa prior to the lockout.

Correa is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in which he hit .279/.366/.485 with 34 doubles, 26 home runs and 92 RBI over 640 plate appearances (148 games).

Some with Dodgers reportedly to Correa

Despite the tension between the Dodgers and Correa from the 2017 World Series, some within the organization reportedly are open to the idea of signing him.

However, it’s unclear if that sentiment extends into the clubhouse, which is most important considering Dodgers players have been vocal about their frustration with Correa and the Astros.
